Filtering of Toxins The liver acts as an important filtering system that gets rid of our body’s impurities, toxins and waste products. An unhealthy liver if not treated, can lead to cirrhosis and hepatitis.^

Diagnosis of Liver Dysfunction & Damage

Liver disease often can be difficult to diagnose because symptoms can be vague and easily confused with other health problems. Below are four common methods specialists use to diagnose liver diseases.

diagnosis-001

Liver Function Test 1

To carry out its diverse range of metabolic tasks, the liver needs tools to perform its functions. These tools are enzymes, which are measured by liver function tests (LFTs). This test measures levels of 5 major liver enzymes: Bilirubin, Alkaline phosphate (ALP), Gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and Aspartate aminotransferase (AST).

Ultrasound 2

Ultrasound is a method to detect abnormalities in the liver. In this method, the patient undergoes a period of fasting prior to upper abdominal imaging. This helps in getting a better image of the liver. Smoking prior to this procedure also affects the image.

FibroTest 3

This is an advanced form of ultrasound and is helpful in detecting the disease progression in chronic liver disease patients. This is a newer method and currently being tested.

Liver Biopsy 4

Liver biopsy is a diagnostic procedure in which a small piece of liver tissue is removed and examined under a microscope to detect signs of damage or disease. Liver biopsy is recommended only if blood tests or imaging techniques suggest the presence of a liver disorder. The severity of the liver disease can also be determined from the results of a liver biopsy.
